air conditioner blowing weakly

Why does the air conditioner turn off by itself?

Users really panic when their device starts working on its own. At the same time, it does not matter whether it works like this all the time or has only recently begun to behave incorrectly.

As a rule, the air conditioner turns off suddenly. After switching on, no more than 15 minutes pass, and immediately the split system stops showing signs of life. In this article, we will tell you in detail why the air conditioner turns off, and what can be done about it.

Reasons

air conditioning does not work

Before looking for the causes of the breakdown, make sure that the device really turns off. You may have purchased a very quiet air conditioner. And only because of the lack of characteristic noise from the indoor unit, it seems to you that the device does not work.

Turn on the air conditioner, set up the usual operating mode. After switching on, wait from 1 to 15 minutes. If there are malfunctions in the device, it will turn off in this time interval.

Do not focus only on the sound, take a stepladder, get to the indoor unit of the air conditioner and put your hand to the holes at the bottom of the housing, from where the air usually exits. If you do not feel anything, then the device is really faulty.

So, you have made sure that the device turns on and immediately turns off after a short operation. Why is this happening? Here are some of the most common reasons:

  • The set temperature has been reached

  • The dehumidification mode is enabled

  • Compressor has overheated

  • The air temperature sensor is out of order

  • The thermal sensor of the heat exchanger has failed

  • Fan in the indoor unit is faulty

  • Problems with the control board

Let’s take a closer look at each reason.

The set temperature has been reached

the air conditioner does not immediately blow cold

This is the most common reason why the air conditioner stops. If you have a regular device, not an inverter, it will automatically turn off when it reaches the set temperature. That is, if you set the temperature, for example, +22 degrees, the device starts working at full power, reaches 22 degrees and turns off.

At the same time, a special sensor reads the air temperature in the room, and if it is higher/lower than the 22 degrees you set, then the device will automatically turn on and again cool/heat the air to the set temperature. This is the normal operation of the air conditioner.

Dehumidification mode is enabled

In the dehumidification mode, the device does not work indefinitely. It performs its function for 15 minutes. In this mode of operation, the air conditioner itself turns off after a while, this is normal.

The compressor has overheated

split system compressor

But this is a more serious reason. The air conditioner is equipped with a special protection that is triggered when the compressor overheats, which causes the device to automatically stop working.

There can be many reasons for overheating, but the most common are contamination of the split system or an overabundance of the refrigerating agent. With an overabundance of freon, you will not be able to do anything, you will have to call a master.

But you can clean it yourself. With your own hands at home, you will cope with cleaning the indoor unit. Entrust the work with the outdoor unit to a specialist, this is not an easy task. Also, entrust the master with cleaning the drainage tray and the drainage tube.

Let’s go back to the inner block. Follow the simple steps to clean the device with your own hands:

  1. Unplug the air conditioner from the wall outlet;

  2. Remove the decorative panel;

  3. Remove the filter. It is a mesh plate on a plastic base;

  4. Use a vacuum cleaner and a nozzle with a narrow nozzle to remove dust and insects from the inside of the unit;

  5. Rinse the filter under running water. if necessary, use a soft sponge or brush to clean the filter from dirt. As a detergent, use special means for cleaning air conditioners;

  6. Use a sponge and detergent to clean the internal components of the unit;

  7. Dry the unit and filter naturally. Do not use a hair dryer to dry;

  8. Insert the filter into place, close the decorative panel.

The air temperature sensor has failed

Often the device turns off, because the air temperature sensor is faulty in it. Often in this case, the part is simply replaced with a new one. This work is only possible for a specialist with experience, besides, it is necessary to conduct a full-fledged diagnosis before the repair.

The heat exchanger’s thermal sensor has failed

Here everything is the same as in the previous paragraph.

The fan in the indoor unit is faulty

air conditioner stink

For the full functioning of the split system, a serviceable fan is required. If it fails or does not work correctly, the device will simply turn off after 5-10 minutes after switching on. The repair is carried out as in the previous paragraph: by replacing the part with a new one. The work should be carried out by an experienced master.

Problems with the control board

This is the last reason why the air conditioner turns off. Of course, there are other reasons, but we are talking only about the most common ones. A faulty control board can generally work wonders: arbitrarily turn the device on and off, change settings, etc. The exact» diagnosis » will be told by the wizard after the diagnosis, so contact the service center for help.

Results

Does the air conditioner turn on and off without your desire? Don’t panic. If after turning on your air conditioner works for no more than 15 minutes and immediately turns off, there may be several reasons.

Is the dehumidification mode set or is the device not an inverter? So everything is in order, this is a normal mode of operation. In all other cases, you should call the wizard. Only he will be able to determine exactly why the air conditioner is working incorrectly. We wish you good luck!
