Learn more about installing a split system in an apartment and a private house

For each of us, a private apartment or a country cottage is synonymous with a house. This is a place where we can really relax, forgetting about everyday life, where we can finally feel free and at ease.

But what determines the degree of our comfort? For one, four walls and a minimum of furniture are enough, and for the other, it is important to have an expensive repair and a full set of household appliances. But we hope you will agree with one thing: the air conditioner is the very device that can significantly increase our comfort from staying at home.

In this article, we will tell you in detail how to install an air conditioner yourself in an apartment or in a private house. This article is a kind of installation instruction for a wall-mounted climate control system, most often it is simply called a split system.

But keep in mind that for a high-quality installation of an air conditioner, you will need not only tools, but also experience and knowledge. If you are not sure of your abilities, entrust the installation of the air conditioner to professional craftsmen from the service center. After all, the installation of split is a troublesome and by no means simple matter.

Installation stages

How can I move the air conditioner to another place?

Let’s take a step-by-step look at how to install split systems yourself. Installation of the split air conditioner consists of several key stages, each of which can be divided into sub-stages. To better understand the amount of work to be done, read the brief description of the installation process:

Installation of the outdoor unit:

  • Selection of the location, installation of the bracket, transportation of the unit to the required height, installation of the unit, installation of the protective visor; 2 .* Laying the route:*

  • Selection of the route location, selection of materials (pipes and thermal insulation), calculation of the amount of material, wall shtroblenie, laying of the route, connection to the outdoor unit, drainage pipe output, plastering of the route (with concealed installation); 3 .* Installation of the indoor unit:*
  • Selection of a place, installation of a mounting plate, installation of a block, connection to the route and electrical wiring, closing of the route with a decorative box (for outdoor installation);

  • Vacuuming, filling with refrigerating agent, first start — up and testing.

As you can see, the amount of work is large. Before carrying out the work, make sure that your skills and strength are sufficient to perform the installation efficiently and in full. To install an air conditioner, you will need a professional tool and several hours, as well as partners.

We recommend that you still entrust this work to professional installers. Yes, their services are not cheap, many owners of split systems are not ready for such expenses. But, believe me, this is not the kind of expense item that you need to save on. Incorrect installation leads to additional problems, which later still have to be solved for money. And sometimes this leads to more expenses than if you initially entrusted the installation to an experienced specialist.

Next, we will tell you in detail how to choose the right place for installation, how to install blocks and routes, what work needs to be done after installation.

Choosing a place

For indoor unit

The first question that you should decide is where to install the indoor unit. Disputes on this issue do not subside. We will share our opinion, but, ultimately, it’s up to you.

Our experience suggests that the indoor unit should be installed in the room in which you spend the most time. In a family, this is usually a hall or a living room. If the funds allow, you can buy a multi-split system and install air conditioners in several rooms at the same time.

If the apartment or house is small (up to 50-60 sq. m.), you can hang an indoor unit over the entrance door in the hallway. So the air flows will be evenly distributed throughout all the rooms. This option is especially good in two-room apartments, tested on personal experience!

Also, when choosing a place, consider the possible presence of curtains, ceiling skirting boards, etc. Keep the air conditioner away from the radiators and do not install the device directly over your head, this is not the best solution.

Some owners choose to install in the kitchen. This is not the worst option, but it is still difficult to call it successful. Kitchens, as a rule, do not differ in large sizes. And high humidity does not affect the operation of the indoor unit in the best way.

In addition, practice has shown that the filters of air conditioners installed in the kitchen are eventually covered with a noticeable layer of fat, which is not easy to clean. But this is what you, your children and pets breathe afterwards.

For outdoor unit

Vibration of the external and internal air conditioner unit

Everything is more complicated here. First of all, you need to find out what materials the walls are built of in your house, whether it is an apartment building or a private house.

First, let’s talk about the frequent house. If the walls are built using frame technology, you need to take care of mortgages in advance, otherwise the facade simply will not withstand the weight of the outdoor unit. There may also be difficulties with aerated concrete: the material is porous and fragile. Often, outdoor blocks are torn off from the facade of an aerated concrete house. To avoid this, use reinforced fasteners or mount the unit on the roof/blind area/balcony.

When installing on a ventilated facade, you need to remove several facade plates, as well as remove small sections of insulation in places where the bracket will be attached. It, in turn, should be attached to the wall with the help of powerful anchors.

Then the facade plates are installed in place, pre-cut holes for the bracket in them. Only after these preparatory works can the outdoor unit be hung. It is strictly forbidden to install the bracket on a metal frame.

Installation on the brick wall

But the owners of brick houses, we can say, were lucky. They will not have any problems with the installation of the outdoor unit. The brick perfectly withstands weight if you use high-quality brackets.

As for apartment buildings, everything is simpler here. Often, the MCD is built of bricks, monoliths or slabs. In all cases, the bracket holds perfectly, reinforced fasteners are not required.

A few words about the sides of the world. We are convinced that the outdoor unit should be installed on the north or west side. The air conditioner must be protected from direct sunlight and heat. The compromise is the installation on the eastern side, but not on the southern side.

Also, a visor can be mounted above the unit to protect it from atmospheric precipitation. This is an optional element, you install it only at your own request. Please note that in severe frosts, dangerous icicles can form on the visor, which will have to be periodically knocked down.

For communications

air conditioner route

There are two ways to set the route: hidden and visible.

  • Hidden installation of the route* is the most preferred option. In this case, all communications are placed in a pre-prepared recess in the wall, after which they are plastered and finished.

  • Outdoor installation of the route * involves the installation of communications on top of finishing (wallpaper or painted walls) and their last hiding in a decorative box. This is not the most aesthetic option, but if the repair is already finished, then there is no other choice.

The location of the route is determined taking into account the location of the indoor unit. At the same time, it is necessary to literally draw on the wall with a marker where the track will be located, what its dimensions are. This will help with wall chasing, especially if you are a novice master.

Now let’s move on to the main thing — how to install air conditioners yourself with your own hands. We remind you that the installation of a split system will require certain skills and knowledge from the master, often highly specialized. If you do not have enough experience, you should not rely on your own strength. Call professional installers and entrust them with this difficult task.

Of the outdoor unit

Often, experienced craftsmen start with the installation of an outdoor unit. At the same time, it does not matter whether it is a private DPI or an apartment building. The unit can be hung vertically or horizontally. Vertical installation is most popular, but if the walls are frame or aerated concrete, it is better to choose horizontal installation. I.e., put the outdoor unit on the roof or blind area.

Let’s return to the vertical installation. A bracket is attached to the facade of the house, then a block is placed on it. At the connection points of the unit with the bracket, it is necessary to use special gaskets designed to dampen excessive vibration. If you refuse them, over time the fasteners will loosen, the unit will begin to emit a loud hum and other unpleasant sounds.

rubber gaskets at the air conditioner

For horizontal mounting of the outdoor unit of the split system, it is necessary to use a special bracket. It is attached to a horizontal surface (flat roof or blind area). Between the bracket and the block, you also need to put gaskets-vibration dampers. In this case, they are also needed to reduce the noise level.

Please note

That working at height is fraught with risk. If you plan to perform installation at a height of more than three meters, it is better to entrust this task to professionals. Believe me, your life and health are more important than any savings.

Self-installation is possible only if the device is mounted at a low height. In this case, you can do the work, armed with partners and a stepladder. But we still do not recommend installing an outdoor unit if you do not have enough experience.

Let’s go back to the installation. It is important to observe the minimum distance between the block and the wall — 10 cm. This way the air will be able to circulate freely at the back of the unit. During installation, it is necessary to use the building level, the block is installed without distortions.

Pay special attention to the quality of the fasteners and the bracket. Give preference to materials in the medium or high price category from well-known manufacturers,. Even better, if the store can provide you with quality certificates or a guarantee for products.

what is a stroba

The route consists of copper tubes and wires that connect the outdoor and indoor unit. A refrigerating agent (freon) circulates through the tubes. Also, a drainage pipe is removed from the indoor unit to the street or into the sewer, condensate will flow down it.

The route is laid in two ways:

  • hidden way into the wall (then plastered and closed with finishing materials);

  • in a decorative plastic box (on top of the finishing finish).

The first option is more aesthetic and is used most often, but if the repair is already completed, only the second method of laying the route remains.

Of the indoor unit

Self-dismantling of the split system

To understand how to properly install an air conditioner, it is not enough to take care only of the outdoor unit. Therefore, at the next stage, we install the indoor unit.

If you used a hidden installation method, the internal unit of the split system should be installed AFTER finishing. It is much more convenient to carry out repair work this way. If you hang the block before painting the walls or pasting wallpaper, you will face difficulties.

The indoor unit is installed not on the wall, but on the so-called mounting plate, which is previously screwed directly to the wall. The block is connected to the plate either with the help of latches (most often), or with the use of another type of fastener (rarely).

During installation, the track is connected to the unit. The copper tubes are connected to the fittings, and the electrical wiring is connected to the «brains» of the air conditioner. Also, a separate wire is laid directly into the shield. A separate line is allocated to power the air conditioner.

Refueling and testing

When the installation of the split system is finished, it is necessary to fill the track with a refrigerating agent (freon) and test the air conditioner. Before refueling, it is necessary to get rid of excess air in the pipes. To do this, the master performs vacuuming.

After vacuuming and refueling the air conditioner, you need to carefully check the operability of the device. This stage usually takes at least an hour. It is necessary to test all the main functions (cooling, heating, ventilation, dehumidification, etc.).

The operating modes are switched not instantly, but within 10-15 minutes. Only after this time you will be able to feel real changes in the operation of the air conditioner. That’s why testing takes so much time.

When checking the operability, the device should work quietly and smoothly, without making strange sounds and smells. If the device behaves in the opposite way, it means that mistakes were made during installation. Below we analyze the most common ones.

Mistakes of novice masters

air conditioner crackles

Now that we have figured out how to install an air conditioner on our own, we will focus in more detail on the typical mistakes of novice craftsmen. They are especially common when home craftsmen decide to install an air conditioner in an apartment on their own, without having sufficient experience.

The most common errors and breakdowns:

  • When laying the route, copper pipes were bent without the use of a special tool — a pipe bend, and also cut off with a conventional hacksaw instead of a pipe cutter. As a result, creases formed on the pipes or metal chips got inside;

  • Vacuumization is not performed or performed poorly, the route is not sufficiently sealed;

  • The selected type of freon turned out to be unsuitable; ;

  • The connections are tightened excessively or, conversely, insufficiently;

  • Outdoor and / or indoor unit is mounted «by eye» without a building level, a horizontal skew is noticeable;

  • The materials were selected without taking into account the technical characteristics of the air conditioner;

  • The outdoor unit is installed on a glazed balcony, without access to a sufficient amount of fresh air.

These are just the most common mistakes experienced specialists face when they come to a call. If you do not have sufficient qualifications, you should not install the air conditioner yourself. Entrust this work to professionals.

When selecting masters, pay attention to their work experience and the availability of recommendations. You should not involve specialists who are ready to work for a modest fee and whose professionalism you doubt.

We hope that our instructions for installing the air conditioner were useful for you. Installing an air conditioner with your own hands is not an easy task that requires certain skills and knowledge. This is especially true for the installation of an outdoor split system unit. After all, this work often has to be done at a high altitude, which is associated with a health risk.

To take advantage of all the advantages of an air conditioning system, it must be installed correctly. We recommend that you entrust the installation of the split to professional craftsmen who can boast not only the availability of tools, but also specialized skills.
